Area of Study:
Music Business/Sound Recording Technology

I chose my major because… I wanted to continue to enhance my skills as a musician and also learn about the business world in relation to the music industry.

My favorite thing to do on campus is… toss a football or Frisbee around in the Quad or Wish Field. I also just like socializing with friends in Lincoln Park, because Lincoln Park is such a strong part of the campus community.

The learning environment here at DePaul is… well balanced between the social atmospheres like The Ray or the Student Center and solo work atmospheres like the Library or SAC (Schmitt Academic Center). I can always find the type of environment I need to get my work done.

My favorite professor at DePaul is… Cathy Elias because she always has as much energy as the students -- if not more -- and she is pretty entertaining so class goes by quickly. She is a great music theory teacher but also very resourceful when it comes to other classes or fields of interest.

When I have free time, I like to… write and record music at my apartment, go to the gym to work out or ride my bike to the zoo if it’s a nice day out. During the warmer months, the beach is a great place to go hang out with friends, too.

Here, the diversity of students, faculty and staff… helps students from culturally secluded backgrounds to branch out, interact and network with people they may not have if they went somewhere else.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is… that finding something to do is facilitated by the many options a city like Chicago offers. There are so many unique neighborhoods, restaurants, parks and concert venues that just make exploring Chicago a treat in itself.

As a student and musician, going to the School of Music appealed to me because… of the tight social music environment that you encounter. There are always students hanging out, doing group work or just exchanging musical tastes in the lounge or elsewhere.

The benefits of attending an urban university when it comes to performance are… Being in Chicago is incredible because of all of the concert venues that are available, from operatic performance to jazz to rock. Any musical genre is open to you as an audience member or as a performer. At the Concert Hall, we get audience members from the surrounding neighborhoods all of the time, and its nice to see some unfamiliar faces that just came to hear you play.
