Jim Doyle has led the transformation of DePaul's Student Affairs Division, especially the conversion of the Lincoln Park campus from a commuter to a residential campus, since he became vice president for Student Affairs in 1982. During his tenure, the number of students living on campus swelled from 340 to 2,400, requiring the construction of seven residence halls. To meet their needs, he significantly expanded student services and programs, oversaw the construction of the $25 million new student center and the $15 million Ray Meyer Recreation and Fitness Center (nationally recognized by "Athletic Business" magazine as "Facility of the Year" in 2000).

He also oversaw the construction of the Athletic Center, an $11 million facility used as a training center for DePaul's NCAA Division I athletes. Doyle was instrumental in providing direction and support for the growth of the DePaul women’s intercollegiate program and in meeting Title IX requirements.

Doyle and his Student Affairs team have been committed to providing a high-quality and integrated student experience based on the university's mission and values, experiential learning, student success and a commitment to diversity. Under his direction, Student Affairs collaborated with the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences to create the First Year Program, nationally recognized for its innovation and academic partnership by the National Resource Center for the Freshman Year Experience at the University of South Carolina.

Doyle created the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, the Cultural Center and established a variety of services to support students of color at DePaul, now one-third of all undergraduates. In addition, he is responsible for Residential Education, Student Life (including programs and organizations), University Ministry, University Counseling Services, the Dean of Students Office and the Student Leadership Institute.

Prior to joining DePaul, he was vice president for student personnel and dean of students at Creighton University in Omaha from 1976 to 1982. He joined Creighton in 1972 as associate dean of students. Previously, he was assistant dean of men at Marquette University (1968-1971) and associate dean of students and dean of men at the University of San Diego (1971-1972).

He earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology, magna cum laude, in 1968 from the Aquinas Institute of Philosophy in River Forest, Ill., and his master of education degree in guidance and counseling from Marquette University in 1971.

Doyle is a member of the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, American College Personnel Association, Society for University Planning and The Association of American Colleges and Universities. He has done accreditation work for The Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Doyle is also a trustee of the O'Brien/Vrba Scholarship Board and the Board of Trustees of ChildServ. He is active in his parish, St. Clement Church, as chair of the Social Justice Committee and a member of the Human Concerns Committee.
