Julie DeRoche
Associate Professor of Clarinet
School of Music
What
is the most rewarding aspect of teaching at DePaul?
My students are highly motivated workers and very good people. They
attend DePaul in part because they want to study with me. I give
them my best information and attention because they give me their
best effort. Together we turn them into professionals.
What do you like best about DePaul students?
Their ability to see the real world, and work in it and with it.
Their desire to do well. Their ability to be both competitive and
collegial.
What do students like best about the courses you teach?
I teach an unusual thing – applied lessons in music. They
must learn from me how to work at the highest level, and this is
what I expect – the highest level of work. This is precisely
what they like. They know that I am giving them ways to achieve
success in a difficult but wonderful field, and they are the kind
of students who truly love the field and want to know how to succeed.
What has been your greatest success while teaching here?
I have happy, well-adjusted students who learn more each day that
they are here. They, along with me and my fellow faculty members,
have made a truly high level program in music.
What makes DePaul different from other universities?
We use the city as our campus, and our faculty members actually
work in the fields that we are teaching. What could be better than
to study music with successful musicians that are working in studios,
performing in jazz clubs, playing in orchestras, or working in arts
administration? This is truly an urban school, and DePaul and our
students use this to best advantage.
What would you say to prospective students considering DePaul?
We consider our students to be very important. We want them with
us. We want them to learn. We will teach them well.
