What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching at DePaul?
After many years of experience in the courtroom and in the classroom, my students continue to amaze me. There’s usually a moment – I can almost always see it in my students – when their learning coalesces into a combination of practical and intellectual enlightenment. Witnessing that moment -- the feeling of pride I get is indescribable.

What has been your greatest success while teaching here?
My students and the great work we have done.   We have done some excellent representation of individuals, and have also had some impact on policy through amicus brief writing, education outreach and involvement in our community.

What makes DePaul different from other universities?
The best part of working at DePaul is the community of those around me. My colleagues are supportive, collegial and wonderful to teach and collaborate with. They truly value high quality teaching. And my students exhibit a creativity and enthusiasm that inspires me. Our school of law, as well as the university as a whole, is still on the way up. In fact the law school rose nearly 30 places in the rankings since I last talked about this, and while rank isn’t everything, it’s a nice reflection of the hard work that everyone at DePaul is doing. I feel lucky to be a part of it.

How would you describe the DePaul community?
This is an academic community that is very welcoming to everyone.  Our fall 2006 class is 31% people of color, and our student body is diverse in other ways too – people coming to law school alter in their lives, students who are the first ones in their families to go to a professional school, and people with working class backgrounds of other sorts in addition to the more traditional law student.

What else can you tell us about the academic environment here at DePaul?
This is an academic environment in which all kinds of scholarship is appreciated – theoretical, empirical and practical.  It is the sort of place where you can have a conversation with students and/or colleagues that leaves you breathless, excited and inspired to do better work.
