The Environmental Science Program (ESP) is a field and laboratory science-based curriculum leading to a BS degree. Its mission is to prepare students to work in the environmental field upon graduation, to attend a professional school, or to attend a graduate school in a related area. The ESP curriculum is interdisciplinary, with substantial grounding in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, but also including mathematics, public policy, economics, and statistics. The ESP core curriculum consists of environmental science courses, along with a number of courses in the other sciences and Liberal Studies, and a variety of electives. Students are required to conduct a senior thesis research project.
Faculty members are active researchers in soil and wetland science, restoration ecology and conservation biology who collaborate with ESP majors on projects that are published in scholarly journals. With knowledge on environmental issues that cover a broad spectrum, faculty from biological sciences, chemistry, and physics complement the program.
Internships are available with governmental agencies, environmental organizations and businesses. ESP graduates work in a variety of careers with government agencies, corporations and consulting firms. Many ESP graduates also pursue graduate studies in related fields.
The post-glacial setting, the proximity of Lake Michigan and the unique urban ecosystem of Chicago all provide abundant opportunities for study. Chicago also provides the opportunity to establish contact with professionals in the field and attend national meetings and seminars.
