Administered through the department of Biological Sciences, the Allied Health Technologies program of studies is nearly identical to the standard biological sciences concentration. Upon completing the requirements for the Allied Health Technologies program, the student typically spends one year in an internship at a medical center or hospital. Successful completion of National Board Examinations, which are administered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, permits the graduate to practice as a clinical laboratory scientist in all 50 states. The student may also continue graduate studies in Allied Health Technologies to earn a doctoral degree.
The McGowan Biological and Environmental Sciences Building provides modern teaching labs and spacious research facilities. The building houses many specialized equipment rooms including tissue culture facilities, PCR labs, environmental chambers, a DNA sequencer, a darkroom and a greenhouse. Students enjoy our skylit atrium lounge, a study area and a computer lab. Most faculty direct their own research programs that include undergraduate and graduate students.
Classes in the first year emphasize intensive laboratory work. Faculty teach all labs. The faculty are recognized nationally and internationally for academic and professional achievement in a variety of scientific areas.
Chicago has a large number of world-class researchers and teachers. Resources and internships that enhance a student's education include the Argonne National Laboratories, Children's Memorial Hospital, and Lincoln Park Zoo, to name a few.
