Sociology offers areas of study in Cultural Studies, Health Services, Juvenile Justice, Law and Society, Community Practice and Urban Sociology.
The curriculum comprises research and theory, as well as specific topics and courses in applied sociology. Varied internships are offered at the Chicago Crime Commission, Children's Memorial Hospital, Habitat for Humanity and others. Students benefit from the Alpha Kappa Delta honorary society.
The faculty are active researchers and scholars who stay in close touch with students. Their interests cover such varied topics as urban space and time, visual documentation of the gentrification of urban neighborhoods, youth gangs, the drop-out problem in Chicago schools and many others.
Chicago is a laboratory for research and observation with its ethnic communities, economic development and urban issues. Students have access to a remarkable range of social service agencies, medical and counseling centers, government organizations and others where they establish contact with professionals and augment learning.
