General Admission Requirements

A complete master's degree student application to DePaul School of Music includes the following:

  • your official undergraduate transcripts
  • three letters of recommendation
  • live entrance audition (for Performance and Jazz Studies students)
  • composition portfolio (for Jazz Studies Composition and Composition students)
  • teaching philosophy statement and live interview (for Music Education Students)

  • Schedule your audition
  • Audition in person, on a weekend in February. Audio cassette tapes, CDs, video tapes and DVDs are acceptable only for students currently residing outside of the continental United States. 
  • Audition results are reviewed and all decisions about acceptance are made in late March. Students are informed of the results by April 1. 
  • Response to an acceptance is required no later than May 1. 

 Composition, MM 


  • In addition to your application, please submit a minimum of three original scores. The scores should reflect a variety of instrumentation and/or media. Recordings are helpful but not necessary. 
  • An audition is not required. 
  • Students will be informed of admissions decisions by April 1. 
  • Response to an acceptance is required no later than May 1. 

Music Education, MM

 
  • Applicants for the Masters in Music Education, in addition to the three letters of recommendation and undergraduate transcripts, should submit a statement of their teaching philosophy (not to exceed 500 words) and schedule an interview​ with the Music Education Department Chair. 
  • An audition is not required. 
  • Students will be informed of admissions decisions by April 1. 
  • Response to an acceptance is required no later than May 1. 

General Admission Requirements for Teacher Licensure

The teacher licensure program at DePaul is designed to meet the needs of individuals who have earned an undergraduate music degree from an accredited institution (i.e. music performance, jazz studies, composition, sound recording) and wish to obtain Illinois State K-12 music teacher licensure. To be eligible for the Music Teacher Licensure program, you must have earned an undergraduate degree in music by the time you enroll at DePaul. However, this is not a graduate program.
