Special Update:  New Legislation Enhances Student Loan Benefits

Legislation has been passed that will significantly benefit undergraduate students who borrow federal student loans, and their parents who borrow Federal Parent Loans (PLUS).  Preliminary information about the legislation is described in brief below.  Please note although this legislation takes effect after July 1, 2008, the U.S. Department of Education has not yet issued regulations or implementation dates.  We will continue to monitor updates to this legislation and keep you informed on this web site.

This legislation will make additional unsubsidized loan funds available to undergraduate students.  This additional loan eligibility would add the option of an increased $2,000 in annual Federal Direct Unsubsidized Student Loan funds to eligible students whose costs support this increased loan amount.

We anticipate that we will send all eligible students a revised award notice, reflecting this increased eligibility, as soon as we receive full information from the U.S. Department of Education.  Eligible students will have the option of accepting this additional $2,000 loan,  reducing any PLUS or private loan funds by this amount.

This legislation also allows parents to choose to defer payments on a 2008-2009 Federal Parent Loan (PLUS) until six months after the date the student ceases to be enrolled at least half time. Accruing interest could either be paid by the parent borrower monthly or be capitalized quarterly.
