Like any new subject, financial aid can seem a bit puzzling at first: there are terms to learn, processes to follow, and pitfalls to avoid. Not to worry–we'll guide you through the process and help you as needed along the way.

Financial aid is a broad term that encompasses a variety of options, including gift aid like scholarships that you don't have to repay, federal and private loans that must be repaid, and employment such as work-study or assistantships. Review these types of aid and their requirements.

You'll automatically be considered for most of these types of aid when you complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For some programs, such as scholarships and alternative loans, you'll need to complete an additional application. Applying for Aid will explain the steps for all these options. Pay close attention to important dates, because many programs operate on a first-come, first-served basis.

Once we have all your materials, our team begins the award process. In some cases, we'll need to ask you for additional information. We'll notify you when we've assembled your award package.

In most cases, your aid will be credited to your account - a process called disbursement - at the start of each term. You can monitor your awards and your account through the student portal, called Campus Connection.

Through Campus Connection, you also can review the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), which covers the privacy of student records maintained by institutions such as DePaul. FERPA ensures that you can inspect your own records, correct any misinformation, and determine what information, if any, that DePaul may release about you.
