If you are a veteran of U.S. military service or an eligible dependent under the Dependents Educational Assistance Program (see below), you may be eligible for Veterans Administration (VA) Educational Benefits.  For more detailed information, visit the Veterans Affairs website, or contact the VA Counselor in the Financial Aid Office.

Our office coordinates processing for the  following VA educational benefit programs:

  • The Montgomery GI Bill for those who enlisted after July 1, 1985
  • The Selected Reserve Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 1606), part of the GI Bill effective July 1, 1985
  • The Dependents Educational Assistance Program (Chapter 35) for children of deceased or disabled veterans
  • The Vocational Rehabilitation Program (Chapter 31) for disabled veterans approved by the VA for study at DePaul

Future Program:
The New GI Bill:
 The Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008/Post 09/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) is effective August 1, 2009.  This program provides comprehensive educational benefits to veterans who served after September 11, 2001. Some of its features include:

  • Amount of tuition and fees charged, not to exceed the most expensive in-State undergraduate tuition at a public institution of higher education (paid to school);
  • Monthly housing allowance equal to the basic allowance for housing; and
  • Yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1,000 per year

Please note: The Illinois Veteran's Grant (IVG) is not available for students at DePaul. Currently it is only available to students attending Illinois public universities.

If you're not sure what your benefits are, contact the VA office in St. Louis at 888-442-4551; follow the instructions for a rotary phone and you'll be connected with a counselor. You also may request information through the Veteran's Affairs web site.

HOW DO I APPLY?

VA benefit application processes vary from program to program.  The best place to obtain VA educational benefit application forms is at the VA web site (www.gibill.va.gov). Once you have completed your VA educational benefit application forms, you should contact our office at (312) 362-8091 (option 5) or complete our Request for Certification of VA Educational Benefits Form and submit it to our office.
