FINANCIAL AID

Assistantships

Graduate Assistantships are available to MA/PhD students. There is no department funding available for MS students.

Assistantships awarded to first-year students are renewable for the students’ second and third years, provided the students make satisfactory progress in the program and provided the funding is not based on "soft" money such as a time-limited grant. Those MA/PhD students who do not receive awards in their first year will be considered again for awards in their second year, insofar as departmental resources make this feasible.

Graduate Assistants may serve as Teaching Assistants or Research Assistants. Teaching Assistants work in laboratory sections of Experimental Psychology, discussion sections of Introductory Psychology, other courses in the undergraduate curriculum, or related teaching activities. Research assistants may be placed in a variety of department or University projects, or in applied settings. Graduate Assistantships in the Department of Psychology carry stipends of $15,500 per academic year and full tuition waivers. Stipends associated with grants or fellowships may be funded at a higher level. In exchange for a full stipend and tuition waiver, a Graduate Assistant is expected to work 20 hours per week during the academic year.

A small number of students are funded in their fourth and fifth years (dissertation stage) through part-time departmental teaching assignments. Many advanced clinical students obtain part-time employment in local mental health agencies and other institutions, while advanced Experimental and Industrial/Organizational students find employment in industry or academics.
