H1N1 Vaccine Available to Priority Student Populations 10/21/09

Dear Students,

DePaul Health Services has received a limited supply of H1N1 influenza vaccine, and we will hold a vaccination clinic exclusively for students Friday, Oct. 23 on the first floor of the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because the current supply is limited, public health authorities recommend that only individuals in priority populations receive the vaccine at this time. Please see below to determine whether you fit into any of the priority categories.

PRIORITY POPULATIONS:

  1. PREGNANT WOMEN - Pregnant women have a high complication risk from the H1N1 virus and can potentially provide protection to a developing infant who cannot be vaccinated.

  2. CAREGIVER TO A CHILD YOUNGER THAN 6 MONTHS - Those who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age are a priority because younger infants have a higher complication risk from influenza and cannot be vaccinated.

  3. STUDENTS WITH CHRONIC ILLNESSES - Students with chronic medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, cancer and immune disorders should be vaccinated because these underlying conditions can increase the risk of complications from influenza.

  4. HEALTH CARE WORKERS - Health care workers with direct patient contact should be vaccinated because they could infect potentially vulnerable patients and could come into contact with others who could have been exposed to the H1N1 virus.

Vaccines will be distributed to students who are in the priority populations listed above on a first-come, first-served basis. Once again, the date for this clinic is Friday, Oct. 23 on the first floor of the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for the vaccination. However, a DePaul student ID is required. Students under 18 will need permission from their parent or legal guardian to receive the vaccine.

Further H1N1 flu vaccine updates will be sent by e-mail and posted on DePaul's home page at www.depaul.edu/campusNotice.asp if more vaccine becomes available to the university.
