I chose my major because... I wanted to be a scenic designer since I was in junior high. I love all the creative possibilities this profession can offer. It combines two of my favorite things: creative designs and crazy schedules. I knew that I wanted a career that did not involve me sitting at a desk from 9 to 5. With a BFA with a focus in scenic design from DePaul, I will graduate with many connections and opportunities to proceed in the theater profession.

I decided to attend DePaul because... for two reasons. One is because of The Theatre School Conservatory Program. Through this school I am able to get training specifically designed for my career, while simulating an atmosphere parallel to the one I will experience after I graduate. The other is because of DePaul’s location. Chicago is a great city, full of culture and diversity. It has a variety of entertainment and activities throughout the city

The class I most enjoyed here was... my rendering class last year. It was a year-long studio class intended to perfect student’s drawing skills and master different usages of mediums. I furthered my skills in charcoal, pastels, watercolor and acrylics over the year.

When I have free time, I like to... sleep. The Theatre School is very demanding and I jump at the chance to get extra rest. I also love to immerse myself in the city. Whether it is going to the lake or to the hustle of downtown life, there is always something to do in Chicago.

My favorite thing to do off campus is... go to the Lake Michigan. It is great to be able to walk a couple blocks and be on the lake. There is a bike/walking path, a beach and parks. It is a great place to relax and hang out with friends.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... everything. There are so many positive aspects -- I do not know where to begin. There are numerous theaters, parks and venues in Chicago that have entertainment events almost every weekend.

The Study Abroad Program is an attractive option for students considering attending DePaul because... the program has a variety of destinations spread throughout the world. Each program focuses on different aspects of academic concentrations. There are four options for lengths of time studying abroad: a year, two quarters, one quarter, or a short program offered during the summer and winter breaks. Participating in the short program allowed me to be able to study abroad. I took a history course previous to departure where we learned about the culture, history and language of Turkey. Then, in the summer, I studied in Istanbul for two weeks, traveling to different sites around the country, along with the cities of Bursa, Edirne and Iznik.

The thing I will remember most about my Study Abroad experience is... the people and culture of Istanbul. To learn the Turkish language before traveling to Istanbul was one of the most beneficial things I did to prepare for the experience. The Turkish people are most appreciative in others' efforts to speak their language and are eager to share their knowledge of the history of their city...or the best restaurant to eat at. One of the most relaxing parts of their culture is the Hamam, or Turkish bath.

My greatest success as a student here has been... designing my own show. At The Theatre School, you are assigned production practices. These are productions in which the students are in charge of many aspects of the production, such as performance, design, direction and other crew functions. This gives students the opportunity to get personal experience in their focus of study before graduation. Throughout the year, there are seven shows that run in our main stage theatre, The Merle Reskin Theatre, seven shows in smaller theaters, such as the Bailiwick Arts Center and Athenaeum, and many workshops that take place in The Theatre School. These productions are part of the curriculum and are mandatory credits needed to graduate.

After graduation, I plan to... pursue a scenic design career within the theater profession around the Chicago area. Chicago has countless great opportunities to pursue in theater.
