I chose to major in Communication because... I knew that I wanted to pursue a career in broadcast journalism. I love the idea of bringing to life current events as they unfold. There is something very exciting about telling a story through photos, sound and video — and getting the final product together just in time for the live newscast.

I decided to attend DePaul because... I did not want to leave Chicago! I felt that attending DePaul and living in Chicago would allow me to pursue many opportunities that I would not otherwise have if I moved to another town. Through DePaul’s College of Communication Internship Program, I was able to obtain internships at major news stations in Chicago, the number three market, such as NBC Channel 5 and CBS Channel 2. DePaul University has a great reputation at many companies in the city and I was able to make connections with successful professionals in the business.

The learning environment here at DePaul is... unique and beneficial to students' learning. The classes are small — students and professors are able to get to know each other. DePaul not only encourages learning in the classroom, they also emphasize learning outside of the classroom through the service learning classes, as well as Discover or Explore Chicago.

The class I most enjoyed here was... Television News Reporting taught by Dr. Lisa Pecot-Hebert. Throughout the quarter, each member of the class created three news packages in which we had the opportunity to film, edit, write and voice-over our own pieces. This class allowed me to learn about many aspects of journalism by actually experiencing the role of a reporter. At the end of the course, I had broadcast news stories of which I could be proud and could share.

When I have free time, I like to... travel! Last year, I spent the summer studying Spanish in Valencia, Spain. I lived with a Spanish family and was able to learn a great deal about Spanish culture, food and traditions. It was an amazing experience to be immersed in a culture very different from my own. During my time there, I was able to travel to some of the greatest cities in Europe including Madrid, Barcelona, Venice and Paris. I plan to go back... several times!

My favorite thing to do off campus is... going out to eat at different types of restaurants all over Chicago. Chicago is a city of neighborhoods and each neighborhood has a distinct character and many great places to eat. One of my favorite restaurants is Lou Malnati’s Pizza. What can be better than deep dish, Chicago-style pizza?

One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was... how perfectly it fit my needs as I prepared for my career. I am proud of all that I accomplished during my college career here. I was able to work with the DePaul Athletics program, obtain internships in a large news market, as well as participate in journalistic events held at DePaul — all of which helped me get to where I am today. As a senior in high school, I never thought that I would have accomplished all that I have at DePaul throughout these past four years.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... the number of opportunities the city has to offer. Chicago is an amazing market for business, marketing and advertising, as well as journalism. Students can take advantage of these employment or internship opportunities through the DePaul Career Center or other employment programs at DePaul. It is a great way to get a head start in the job market while in college. The city also has many fun attractions such as Millennium Park, the museum campus, Michigan Avenue, Navy Pier and Lincoln Park Zoo, among others.

One of the things that has been unique about my College of Communication experience... is being a part of this history in the making! I was able to experience the College of Communication becoming its own school at DePaul. More programs and opportunities are now available to students, such as the news studio on the Concourse Level of the DePaul Center (equipped with cameras, teleprompters and a switcher) and the numerous editing/computer labs, as well as five-year MA/BA programs and new master’s degrees.

What I remember most about my current job and/or my internship... I got hired! Through the DePaul Communication Internship Program, I was able to obtain two internships, one at NBC’s 'In the Loop with iVillage' and another at CBS 2 Chicago, during my college career. Fortunately, after two weeks as an intern at CBS 2 Chicago, I was hired as an assignment desk assistant/field producer. So far, I have had the opportunity to interview many people and produce pieces that air on the weekday or weekend newscasts.

My greatest success as a student here has been... the ability to get involved at DePaul. I was able to work as a manager for the DePaul women’s basketball team, participate in many journalistic events, as well as take advantage of the internship opportunities through the DePaul Communication Internship Program. I have developed strong friendships with other students at DePaul, and I have found great mentors in my professors.

After graduation, I plan to... continue at DePaul for one more year in the five-year Master’s Program for Journalism in the College of Communication. It will be an extremely busy year as I continue my job as an assignment desk assistant/field producer at CBS 2 Chicago, as well.  After graduating with my master’s degree in Journalism, I will be ready to take advantage of any great opportunities that come my way!

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... go for it! Both the city of Chicago and DePaul University have so much to offer students. The DePaul community makes it easy for students to adapt to a new or unfamiliar environment. Clubs, sports, community service and DePaul events are all great opportunities that allow students to get involved at school. Whether you are a commuter student or one who lives on campus, DePaul has something for you. Take a risk — it will be rewarding in the end!
