Area of Study:
Accountancy

I chose my major because... I was always fond of numbers. My first job during high school was with a bank and I really enjoyed the business setting. I learned early on that accounting was the foundation for any business. The market for accountants is abundant and the resources in the profession are enormous. I think I have a knack for it.

My favorite thing to do on campus is... meet with friends and enjoy lunch in the DePaul Center or Student Center. Inside and outside of the classroom, DePaul creates an environment that encourages socialization.

I decided to attend DePaul because of... the diversity in the students and faculty. DePaul showed me that they had a vested interest in my future. The College of Commerce is located in the heart of the business district in downtown Chicago. I knew that I would be able to connect with employers representing many companies throughout the city. There are many programs and organizations on campus, so the potential for involvement is unlimited.

The learning environment here at DePaul is... exciting and fun because you have professors who want to see you succeed. They value your input, so many of the classes are interactive, which allows you to retain much of what you learn. Class sizes are small, so students receive the personal attention that is desired.

My favorite professors at DePaul are... Dr. Sandra Shelton and Professor Stephanie Howell. Dr. Shelton is one professor who is more than just a teacher; she is a mentor. Our conversations are not just limited to accounting, but career choices, campus life and the future. Professor Howell, who insisted that we call her Stephanie, taught me so much about effective communication. She was a friend. Being able to discuss real life issues in a classroom setting made me eager to want to attend class. When I showed I had an interest in a certain topic she encouraged me to present it to the class.

When I have free time, I like to... hang out with friends.

My favorite thing to do off campus is… volunteer. Even when I'm not on campus, DePaul’s Vincentian mission inspires me to want to give back to my community.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... the urban setting. There are so many great attractions in Chicago.

At DePaul, service learning is... unmatched. The service learning component of the coursework at DePaul encourages students to step outside the boundaries of a traditional classroom and look at the world as a place where we can create change.

My experience at DePaul as an accounting major... has been nothing short of exceptional. The professors are easily accessible outside of the classroom. The courses are designed to provide you with a unique experience. You develop many accounting, critical thinking and even business writing skills. I feel that I will leave the accounting program having learned more than just accounting tools, but tools that will make me a well-rounded individual; someone that any company would love to have on their team.

The best thing about DePaul is... the ability to network. On a daily basis, I encounter different individuals whether it is my peers or professionals visiting campus. I feel like I am connected on so many levels. I learn so much.

My greatest success as a student here has been... my personal growth. I allowed myself to become involved. Once I started on the path, the possibilities were endless. There was always something that caught my attention and encouraged me to go further in my personal growth.

After graduation, I plan to... work as a tax consultant for Deloitte. I learned so much during my internship. Just working next to professionals — who only a short while ago were students just like me — allowed me to want to gain the most from the opportunity. I enjoyed the challenge of the work and it made me want to return full time.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... is that the experiences you gain during your time at DePaul will have a phenomenal impact for the rest of your life! I do not believe you can find a better experience in a better location than here at DePaul. I am a living testament!
