I chose to study in the School for New Learning (SNL) because... it really provides the structured system that I crave. Through the use of my grid; which plots my classes and time at SNL, I am able to quantify my progress. After not being in school for a long time it was important for me to be able translate classes into advancement within the program.
I decided to attend DePaul because... because of the cachet associated with a DePaul degree. I have worked for my organization for a long time and have acquired a very strong set of skills that transcend professions and I really wanted a degree that was equally befitting. I have never regretted my choice; I am only convinced it was the right one.
The learning environment here at DePaul is... amazing! I really feel that the amount and variety of resources are abundant and accessible. Whether it be access to the computer labs, counseling, libraries, activities or just space to sit and plug my laptop in, it is all there.
My favorite professor at DePaul is... Marisa Alicea. “How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” When I first enrolled in the SNL program I was very interested in two classes I saw on the course catalog and they were both taught by Professor Alicea. It would be approximately two years before I could take one of her classes and I only wish she had more time to teach. At the risk of sounding trite or cliché I will say Professor Alicea is a true intellectual full of insight and compelling thoughts. She is a gift to those lucky enough to be taught by her.
The class I most enjoyed here was... Latino Chicago
When I have free time, I like to... read, journal and walk my dogs.
One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was... that DePaul is very involved in creating a sense of community among its student body and society through a wide variety of initiatives and programs. I just wish I had more time to contribute.
As a School for New Learning student, building my own customized program has... allowed me to have structure but also the ability to choose where, when and what classes to take within the SNL framework. If I really ponder this question I think it is also because I’m intuitive, intelligent and inquisitive enough to want to learn more and about more than what “I need to.” SNL definitely fulfills this need for me.
My experience as an adult student at DePaul has been... cathartic, I say this because my experience has been challenging, nurturing, and ultimately transforming. There is more to DePaul than the academic experience and it is precisely that element which has contributed to my personal and academic growth.
The best thing about DePaul is... its faculty, hence the cachet behind the name. I truly believe that professors wield a great amount of power. Power to influence, create and stimulate thought not only perpetuate their own. At SNL I have had the privilege being taught and mentored by faculty members that are both respected and well regarded in their fields and at DePaul.
My greatest success as a student here has been... I don’t know I’m not done yet.
