Area of Study:
Public Policy with a minor in Environmental Science

I chose my major because… I wanted to study matters pertaining to the environment and my major, public policy, focuses on environmental issues. As a child I was passionate about the environment and I am happy to expand my ecological interests and knowledge.

My favorite thing to do on campus is… talking with friends and going to different organizational and department events. My favorite department events to attend are those put on by the Cultural Center, Student Life and Residential Education.

I decided to attend DePaul because… I was drawn by the warm feel of the Lincoln Park campus when I went on a tour of DePaul University. I liked the vibe of the local community and campus. I thought that I wanted to attend school out of state, but I am glad I did not. In my heart I knew that I did not want to be too far from my family. In addition to being relatively near my family, I chose DePaul because of its metropolitan location, creditability and small to medium class sizes.

The learning environment here at DePaul is… outstanding because DePaul offers small to medium class sizes that do not tend to exceed 30 students. The smaller class sizes are beneficial because students are able to receive more of their professors’ attention, which equates to a higher quality of education. In addition to quality professor/student relationships the school provides many places to study with over 10 computer labs on campus.

My favorite professor at DePaul is… difficult to choose because I have been blessed to have many good professors. Two of my favorites are Professor Montgomery and Professor Tzoumis. The environmental and public policy knowledge that they shared had a positive impression on my academic career.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is… that there are always fun and entertaining things to do. If you cannot find anything entertaining on campus then you can pick up a newspaper and find something that pertains to your interest nearby.

My experience at DePaul as a public policy major… is intellectually satisfying. When I was a first year student at DePaul I searched and tried other disciplines until I discovered public policy. I enjoy the public policy course topics and professors. I like it when professors have the opportunity to take learning outside of the classroom. In my experience the program has used service learning to take students to different neighborhoods to aid others in fighting for environmental justice. Most of the students in the program are self-motivated and provide support for their fellow classmates using one another as motivators and knowledge reinforcers.

The best thing about DePaul is… it is a university that does not limit the potential of its students. DePaul offers a variety of majors and clubs/organizational activities to foster personal and academic growth. If a student decides to switch majors, they can without having to attend another university and if a student wants to establish a particular club then they can. In addition to academic and personal growth, career enhancement trainings and involvement opportunities in the forms of on-campus jobs and careers are available. Individual departments also host at least one or two career fairs a year.

What I remember most about my internship… is that there was much new information I learned while working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During my internship I linked and mentally expounded on the knowledge that I learned in school with current professional matters and information.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul… is that DePaul University is a good choice because it provides intimate learning environments to maximize intellectual growth. Compared to other universities, our class sizes are small. The personal attention that students receive from their professors and classmates enhances the college experience.
