Area of Study:
Theatre Management with a minor in Philosophy

I chose my major because... I love theater, but I didn’t want to be an actress and I didn’t have the technical know-how to do backstage work. I chose to help the show go on through fundraising, marketing and administration.

My favorite thing to do on campus is... hang out in the lobby of The Theatre School. It’s such a great way to connect with the school; there are actors rehearsing in one corner, designers sketching out costume plots in another and theatre studies students reading and writing plays a few feet away.

I decided to attend DePaul because... The Theatre School is one of the best theatre conservatories in the country, and they offer one of the few undergraduate theatre management programs. I also love the Lincoln Park campus and knew as soon as I visited that this is where I wanted to be.

The learning environment here at DePaul is... very open. Professors encourage discussion and debate and always make sure that students respect each other’s opinions. This has been great in my philosophy classes, where there are often many different interpretations that professors encourage us to discuss.

My favorite professor at DePaul is... Professor Richard Lee. I had him for Medieval philosophy, a requirement for my minor which I was dreading taking, but I absolutely loved the class. He was funny, but also extremely intelligent, and his knowledge of and interest in the material really sparked me to learn.

When I have free time, I like to... take advantage of all of the tasty restaurants in the city. Chicago has so many different culinary options that I had never tried before I came here, and it’s taken me four years to get to all of them.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... the arts and culture! There are so many opportunities here not only to see great work being done, but also to personally participate in an extremely vibrant arts scene.

The Study Abroad Program is an attractive option for students considering attending DePaul because... it offers you a myriad of options, all of which allow you to experience a totally different culture and way of life – and then come back to the classroom to discuss and share how you feel about it.

The most memorable part of my Study Abroad experience was... being completely immersed in London: people-watching in the Underground, seeing British theatre, shopping at Harrods at Christmastime. I really felt like an honorary Londoner after the trip, and I miss it sometimes.

The best thing about DePaul is... the small class size and relationships I’ve developed with my professors. I’ve never had a class that had more than 30 people, and every professor has not only known my name, but encouraged me to stay in touch with them after the quarter was over.

My greatest success as a student here has been... the connections I’ve been able to make in the Chicago arts community while still just a student here. I’ve interned at four arts organizations, including Steppenwolf Theatre, and have built relationships that I know will help me post-graduation.

After graduation, I plan to... work for a year at a non-profit in fundraising, then head off to law school. I want to work as an advocate for children involved in domestic disputes, to help ease what are often very difficult situations. I’d also like to do pro bono work for non-profit and arts organizations.
