Music Education and Voice Performance

I chose my major because... I always knew I wanted to teach but I love to sing – I just couldn’t choose one over the other!

My favorite thing to do on campus is... hang out with my friends and attend School of Music concerts. I love to see my colleagues in action.

I decided to transfer to DePaul because... I knew I wanted to study music and I knew I wanted to come to Chicago, in order to live with my sister. I found out that DePaul has one of the best music programs in the city, was happily invited to join and have concluded since then that I made the right decision.

The learning environment here at DePaul is... both challenging and encouraging. I really appreciate that the classes are small enough for students to be able to feel like they are important and can contribute.

My favorite professor at DePaul is... my voice teacher, Christopher Lorimer.

When I have free time, I like to... go to performances around the city during the school year and attend all the Grant Park concerts during the summer.

One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was... how great the Lincoln Park neighborhood really is.

Here, the diversity of students, faculty and staff... is pretty good for a private school.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... the amazing music scene! There is so much Chicago has to offer for music lovers. I have been soaking it all in since the first day I got here.

At DePaul, service learning is... important, although it has not been a big part of my college career.

The one DePaul experience I will always remember will be... singing Stravinsky’s "Les Noces" for our Spring 2007 choir concert! It included a full choir, four pianos and a sizeable percussion section.

The best thing about DePaul is... its professors, especially its music professors.

What I remember most about my first quarter at DePaul is... my Explore Chicago through Food class. We went all over Chicago sampling the different cuisines that are available in this incredibly diverse city. I can now proudly say that I have actually tried eating frog legs once in my life! Also, I remember feeling a little overwhelmed when I first arrived. Having moved here from a different country, I definitely had to adjust to the culture, the lifestyle and the people. But I soon felt at home and made many friendships that have stayed with me through these past few years.

My greatest success as a student here has been... my progress as a vocalist. This is one of the most important reasons why I came to DePaul, and I am very glad to know that I am steadily improving. Also, in learning not to sweat the small stuff! I think the quarter system has taught me to do this, and I believe this was an important life lesson for me to learn.

After graduation, I plan to... take a six month break and then start teaching!

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... come and visit! Sit in on a class, meet the professors and request a mock lesson. It’s been great for me and chances are that it will be for you. But come and see for yourself first.
