I chose my major because... it covered a lot of ground, like physics, electro-acoustic composition, ear training, music history/theory and many other things. I also met with the head of the program and I really liked his style of teaching, so it only seemed natural to pursue sound recording technology as a major.
I decided to attend DePaul because... it’s got a great music program and is right in the middle of a great city. I had been taking guitar lessons in high school from DePaul grad students and they definitely led me to DePaul’s School of Music.
The class I most enjoyed here was... a tie between my sound recording technology classes and private guitar lessons. Both have taught me more than any other classes have ever taught me.
When I have free time, I like to... I am usually doing something music or photography related, but sometimes I’ll exercise at the gym on campus and visit different places in the city and try new restaurants.
My favorite thing to do off campus is... see comedy shows at iO Theater, attend various concerts and check out one of the many museums here. There are so many things you can do that it’s hard to even begin to list what is available to students.
One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was... how great their Study Abroad office and program are. It wasn’t until sophomore year that I realized how much information there was on studying in a different country and that I'd get course credit for it!
The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... having access to so many different places so easily. The U-Pass is amazing for that; being able to travel is so easy and cheap.
Our Study Abroad program is such an attractive option for students considering attending DePaul because... it has so many options that it can fulfill anyone’s interests. In each country there are often multiple options for programs. Also, the people who work in the office are some of the friendliest I’ve met at DePaul.
The thing I'll remember most about my Study Abroad experience... Being able to comfortably navigate a large Japanese city as if it were my hometown was such a great feeling. Also, my host family became a real family for me and that’s something that everyone should get to experience.
The best thing about DePaul is... that it offers a diverse education so there’s a lot to learn outside of the classroom and, to make it even better, it’s located in a pretty diverse city. There’s always something going on at school and in the city.
After graduation, I plan to... teach English in Japan for a year then hopefully I’ll return to Chicago to focus on pursuing studio engineering and music composition.
The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... Visit the school, talk to students and talk to professors. They will surely talk to you and help you find what you want to do!
