I chose my major because… of the amazing job opportunities that will be available to me after graduation. I can potentially work in public accounting, private industry, the government sector, or consulting. As Warren Buffet once said, “Accounting is the language of business.” I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to study accounting at DePaul knowing there was so much I would be able to do with it.

My favorite thing to do on campus is… I am a huge fan of the basketball games and love to go out and enjoy them as often as I can. Taking the bus to the games is a ton of fun. Riding out there with your friends and rooting for you team is a great time.

I decided to attend DePaul because… deciding to come to DePaul was a big decision for me. I had traveled to Chicago on multiple occasions while on vacation. It is a beautiful city with a never-ending supply of entertainment. You can go to the museums and the Art Institute. You can walk through Lincoln Park, the largest park system in North America. You can always find a concert or show to go to. Of course there are beaches too, something we don’t have much of in Alaska.

The learning environment here at DePaul is… both challenging and stimulating. You always have to be a bit more prepared than you may expect. Walking into a class at DePaul, you never know where the class will end up. The professors seem to love what they do and that makes the learning environment all the better.

The class I most enjoyed here was… Discover Chicago — as a student, as well as a mentor, and I really enjoyed being a part of both classes. It was a great experience leading a classroom discussion, finding my own strengths and weaknesses as a teacher and just interacting with the students. The best part of the experience was participating in all of the outdoor activities. The rock climbing, kayaking the Chicago River, biking along the lake, and volunteering at an adventure race here in Chicago. Being a mentor was an excellent experience and I would definitely suggest it to anyone who is interested in teaching.

When I have free time… I enjoy going for walks downtown, meeting new people and attending sporting events. Afterwards I often go and meet up with friends and enjoy the nightlife that the DePaul campus and Chicago have to offer.

One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was… how fun and entertaining the sporting events were going to be. The DePaul basketball games are a blast. You get to ride the bus to the game with your friends and root for your team. It’s a great experience.

Here, the diversity of students, faculty and staff… is unparalleled by any other school in the country. There are people from hundreds of different backgrounds. I don’t go a day without meeting someone new — whether it is a teacher or student — who has come from some far off part of the world. And each one of them has their own viewpoint on situations making the learning environment ever more unique and eye opening.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is… all of the great professional sports. Since I have been at DePaul the Chicago White Sox won the World Series, the Bears made it to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years, the Bulls went to the play-offs and the Cubs are winning their division. I love sports and it is so much fun to be right in the center of it all.

At DePaul, service learning is… a very important part of the Vincentian values instilled at DePaul. I have participated with classes to clean up the local beaches. I have spent time working with Junior Achievement teaching inner city students basic financial planning skills. I have volunteered at the Breast Cancer Walk. Through community service you not only learn about other people, but you also learn who you are as a person.

My experience at DePaul as an accounting major... has been amazing. I have attended so many functions and office visits and panel discussions that have opened up so many doors for job opportunities. DePaul does a fantastic job of introducing the students to the accounting and business world surrounding the Loop campus. I have gone on class trips to view manufacturing companies and see how they do their accounting. I have had partners from the big four accounting firms come into my classrooms and share their experiences as accountants.

After graduation, I plan to… take the CPA exam and then travel the world for 10 months visiting Australia, Asia, Africa and South America. After that adventure is completed I will work in public accounting for a few years and then hopefully earn an MBA and continue my accounting career.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul… is come to the school and spend some time walking around the campus. It is located in the beautiful Lincoln Park area. Sit in on some classes. If you can, take in a DePaul basketball game. DePaul is a fun and exciting place to spend your college years.
