Area of Study:
Human Services and Counseling: Community Counseling

I chose my area of study because... I wanted to provide therapy to students in a university setting and eventually open a private practice.

The learning environment here at DePaul is... great for students like me who are entering graduate school after working for several years. The professors I work with are experts in the field and share both their academic and real world knowledge.

My favorite professor at DePaul is... Dr. Steve Batten. He has years of solid work experience in the field, a mastery of the material and an amazing teaching style.

The classes I most enjoyed here were... "Group Therapy" and "Career Counseling." Both provided excellent coursework with hands-on training. In "Group," we actually spent a great deal of class time participating in group therapy. In "Career," we were able to work with students at DePaul’s Career Center.

When I have free time, I like to... ride my bike with my wife and spend time on Chicago’s lakefront.

My favorite thing to do off campus is... spend time with my wife in the greatest city in the world.

Here, the diversity of students, faculty and staff is... what make this institution an example of where we should be as a society and a world.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... going to school in the city of Chicago. This is my chosen home and there is no other place that I want to be. When I graduate, my wife and I will remain in this city. It’s got everything New York has without any of the hassles.

At DePaul, service learning is... a major part of the learning experience. Taking theory and putting it into practice is what more universities should require as part of their curriculum.

DePaul's graduate School of Education program is unique compared to other schools I considered attending because... I chose DePaul because of its Human Services and Counseling program and because I knew I could develop the career that I wanted. I also chose it because I felt that the program would be responsive to my needs as a counselor in training and a future professional.

Choosing to pursue graduate coursework at DePaul, in the heart of the city of Chicago, factored in my decision in choosing the School of Education because... I had no interest in leaving this city. The fact that DePaul is a major Chicago school was a chief motivation for me to choose this program.

My greatest success as a student here has been... my performance and my ability to establish relationships with some of the professors that I studied with. As a counselor, the material in class is important, but connection to people in the profession is equally important. Several of my professors were actually professionals working in the community. Learning about the profession from them is invaluable.

After graduation, I plan to... work in a career center at a university in Chicago and begin to build and develop a private practice. I will definitely stay in this city.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... is that at this school you have the power to create the career you want. The school has the resources ready and waiting for you to pick them up and use toward building your professional identity. Do not wait to use them.
