I chose my major because... I have always been interested in human behavior and cognition. There are so many factors that go into why people do or think certain things, and I want to try and understand as many of these causes that I can. I want to use this knowledge to help people who have maladaptive thoughts or are engaging maladaptive behavior because I believe that all people are capable of changing for the better. I want people to understand that they do have the power to not only better themselves, but also to live a healthy and successful life.

My favorite thing to do on campus is… to work out at the Ray Meyer Fitness & Recreation Center. I can run around the track or go to free workout classes (like yoga or Pilates) with my friends. When the weather is nice out, I love running to Lake Michigan because the campus is only a couple miles from the beach.

I decided to attend DePaul because… I wanted to go to school in an urban setting because I didn’t want to feel isolated on a campus that was in the middle of nowhere. I also wanted to go to a mid-sized school so that I could get to know my professors and not feel like I was just one of hundreds of other students in a class. At first I didn’t want to stay so close to home, but when it came down to it, there is no other place like the City of Chicago.

The learning environment here at DePaul is… very nurturing. For the most part, I have liked all of my teachers, and they know me by name. It is easy to make friends in classes because there are usually only 30 students per class. I really like the quarter system because you only have four classes at a time, so finals are never too hectic.

My favorite professor at DePaul is… my economics professor Dr. Hibbard. He is so charismatic and was really good at explaining the entire history of economics in only 10 short weeks — a very daunting task! Also, my biology teachers Dr. Yates and Dr. Brooke were really great as well because they too were really enthusiastic about the material and made complex mechanisms easy to learn. Oh, and I really liked my history teacher Dr. Mockaitis. Let’s just say that I’ve had some really good teachers at DePaul.

When I have free time, I like to… hang out with my friends as much as I can. I really like to cook and bake, and I love bringing my latest concoctions to work or group meetings for everyone to enjoy (hopefully). Also, when I get the chance, I love to do Sudoku, crossword puzzles and watch the ‘Daily Show’ and ‘Colbert Report.’

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is… having the opportunity to do almost anything I want to do. Because DePaul is in the city, I don’t feel isolated or confined. I can easily hop on the El and go anywhere. I can go out to eat at great restaurants, go to movies, plays, concerts, etc. There are pretty much unlimited opportunities in Chicago. Also, one of the great things about being less than two miles from Lake Michigan is that I can go to the beach when it’s nice out!.

At DePaul, service learning is… a great experience. I really enjoyed my service learning class. A few of my friends and I volunteered at a Northern Chicago community center where we taught English to adult Spanish speakers. We were really able to connect with these adults and we learned a lot from them as well.

The best thing about DePaul is… the location! You can’t beat Chicago, and Lincoln Park is the best neighborhood in Chicago.

My greatest success as a student here has been… being able to multitask. In high school, I was always involved in many things, so when I first arrived at DePaul, I was amazed at the amount of free time I had. That changed quickly, however, as I become involved in different student organizations like Honors Student Government and DePaul Student Ambassadors. I have three jobs right now and I also assistant with research for my psychology advisor. I’m proud of the fact that I can be involved in so many different things and still earn good grades.

After graduation, I plan to… go to graduate school and earn a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Yes, unfortunately graduating from college does not end my schooling, but it is very important that I continue on so that I can be successful in my career..

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul is… if you get the chance, shadow a DePaul student. You can stay overnight or just attend class, but either way it’s a great opportunity to take advantage of as you really get to see what it’s like to be a student at DePaul. Shadowing certainly made my college choice a lot easier.
