I chose my area of study because... education and identity development are two strong interests of mine. When I reflected upon my life and what I am passionate about, I came to the decision that I wanted to be a counselor. Serving as a support person for young people is my goal.
My favorite thing to do on campus is... take a quick nap in the library in between work and class in the evening.
The learning environment here at DePaul is... what you make it. There are many resources that can make a DePaul education extremely valuable, but you have to be willing to find and utilize them. Whether it’s finding a mentor or finding a copy of Erikson’s 1968 article, "Identity: Youth and Crisis," DePaul has many resources to offer.
The class I most enjoyed here was... I most enjoyed my "Group Counseling" class. I had a very intelligent and thoughtful professor who encouraged and challenged us to be the same. Groups can be used to provide insight into many complex human interactions, and we received both a theoretical and practical application of therapeutic groups in that course.
When I have free time, I like to... I like to play Scrabble online or do crossword puzzles.
One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was... that DePaul doesn’t have a university-wide graduate student association (e.g. General Graduate Student Association (GSA) or Black Graduate Student Association (BGSA), etc.). These organizations can be helpful in advocating for graduate student resources and services. I incorrectly assumed that every university has these organizations since my undergraduate institution did.
Here, the diversity of students, faculty and staff... DePaul is a university that explicitly expresses its commitment to diversity. Like many universities, there is room to grow, in terms of engaging diverse communities and increasing the enrollment of underrepresented students but as a graduate assistant in the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, I witness the efforts being made to fulfill DePaul’s commitment to diversity.
The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... access to so many professional resources.
DePaul's graduate School of Education program is unique compared to other schools I considered attending because... there are few school counseling programs in the city of Chicago. The fact that DePaul has a program that offers a concentration in school counseling and the opportunity to complete a thesis and graduate with a Masters of Arts led to my decision to choose the Human Services and Counseling program in DePaul’s School of Education.
DePaul’s location in the heart of Chicago did factor into my decision to attend the university since... I don’t have a car. Attending a university that is easily accessible by public transportation is important to me. It is also not far from many community institutions, like schools and hospitals where students in the Human Services and Counseling program intern.
The best things about DePaul are... the people you meet in your classes, in the various departments, offices and organizations at the university. DePaul is made better by the people who choose to attend and/or work at DePaul.
After graduation, I plan to... work with adolescents, ideally in conjunction with high schools in the Chicago Public Schools system and local universities.
The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... be deliberate about your decision to attend DePaul, and when you get here, you should be able to find everything you need.
