Area of Study:
Accountancy

I chose my major because... I believe accounting will give me a great business foundation. My long-term goal is to start my own not-for-profit organization. Therefore, a background in accounting will help me run the organization better.

My favorite thing to do on campus is... to visit the Midwest Association of Hispanic Accountants (MAHA) office on the 6th floor of DePaul Center. It’s a great organization to become involved with that offers great resources to all business students.

I decided to transfer to DePaul because... I wanted the opportunity to attend a university that was closer to my family. I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign my freshman year and had a great experience there. However, I have enjoyed being a DePaul student and don’t regret my decision.

The class I most enjoyed here was...
“Challenging the Real World,” with Professor Ray Coye. It’s a senior class for business students that helps explore your goals and prepares you for your future career in the corporate world.

When I have free time, I like to... volunteer with my friends at local not-for-profit organizations. I enjoy mentoring younger students and being involved in my community.

The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... the great resources.

At DePaul, service learning is... greatly emphasized. DePaul offers many opportunities for students to become involved in community service. I have several friends who have participated in service immersion trips and loved the experience.

One of the things that has been unique about my College of Commerce experience... is all the great opportunities I have received since transferring to DePaul. I transferred after my freshman year, and since then, I’ve encountered many professors, students and alumni who have been willing to mentor me and help me adjust.

The best thing about DePaul is... the location of the downtown campus. It’s in the middle of downtown, which is great for business students. It’s also convenient for me since it’s only located a few blocks from my work.

What I remember most about my current job ... is the great people I have met at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. Working in this great organization for the past year and a half has given me the opportunity to grow professionally.

My greatest success as a student here has been... being a member of the MAHA team that won the 2006 ALPFA/KPMG National Accounting Case Competition. The competition was a nearly-five-month process that gave me the chance to travel to New York and Texas to compete against other schools from across the country. We were proud to bring the 2006 National Title to DePaul.

After graduation, I plan to... work in either internal or external auditing. I also plan to continue being involved with the alumni organization at DePaul. Ultimately, I plan to start my own not-for-profit organization.

The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... is to take advantage of all the resources DePaul has to offer. Be proactive in your successes and prepare for the future you desire.
