My favorite thing to do on campus is... swim laps at the Ray Meyer Fitness & Recreation Center. The gym, located on our Lincoln Park campus, is amazing, and I love when I am able to go swimming between classes in the middle of the winter. Plus, afterwards, I get to treat myself to one of the Bean Café’s tasty smoothies.
I decided to attend DePaul because... The Theatre School is one of the top rated conservatories in the nation. DePaul is located right in Chicago, and all of my professors are working theater professionals around the city. I’ve been able to intern at and make connections with well-known theater companies across Chicago.
The learning environment here at DePaul is... just what I wanted from a university. There are no big lecture hall classes on campus. My largest classes have about forty students, but most of my classes have even fewer. The professors usually take the time to learn their students’ names and they are willing to work with students to help them succeed.
When I have free time, I like to... get out with my friends. There is something to see or to do every night of the week. Lincoln Park is home to many theaters and restaurants, and with the U-Pass, I’m able to travel anywhere in the city on the CTA. The Loop is only minutes away by train.
One thing I didn’t know about DePaul before coming was... how accessible the professors are. They are all willing to answer questions both in and out of class time. I’m able to schedule a time to talk with my professors during their office hours, or even send them questions through e-mail.
The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... you are in Chicago! This city is full of rich culture and history. I can go see a ball game or go down to the Art Institute whenever I want. As a student at DePaul, I get to wake up every morning and be a part of this great community.
At DePaul, service learning is... an amazing experience that will change your life. I spent two quarters in a service learning Spanish class where once a week the students would go to various sites across the city and interact with people from Mexico and Central America as they learned English. Years later, we still talk about the people we met and the impact they had on our lives.
The Study Abroad Program is an attractive option for students considering attending DePaul because of... the flexibility that the Study Abroad Program offers. The December interlude Study Abroad option is a great opportunity for students who are not able to take a year or half a year off to study off-campus. I was able to travel to London in December of 2006 and went to El Salvador this past year. The professors work with you to allow you to focus your research in an area that interests you the most.
The most memorable aspect of my Study Abroad experience is... how I felt the morning I left to return to Chicago. I was amazed at how much I learned and experienced on my trip. Studying abroad introduced me to another culture in a way that I could not have traveling on my own.
The best thing about DePaul is... the variety of involvement on campus. Something is always going on around campus, and it is so easy to get involved with on-campus clubs and organizations. I’ve been to everything from cook-outs in the Quad to film screenings to presentations and guest speakers.
After graduation, I plan to... work in theater for young audiences. I want to introduce youth to the many facets of theater.
The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul... ask questions. Talk to professors and current students. Visit the Office of Admission and the Office of Financial Aid. The staff and students here are more than willing to talk with prospective students and help you decide if DePaul is the right school for you.
