I chose my major because... it's my life. I’ve been playing the piano since I was 4 years old.
My favorite thing to do on campus is... practice and hang out with other musicians.
I decided to attend DePaul because... of my piano professor, Eteri Andjaparidze.
The learning environment here at DePaul is... a great opportunity for pianists who are involved with Amerklavier [a program of advanced piano performance instruction created by Dr. Andjaparidze at DePaul University]. We are trained to perform professionally in concerts every year and are involved in classes that help us grow as musicians.
When I have free time... I like to experience the city of Chicago. My favorite thing to do off campus is to attend concerts by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, go to the Art Institute, the various museums, ballet and the opera.
Here, the diversity of students, faculty and staff... I have not seen students, faculty and staff from other departments, but in the music department there is diversity, but it is less than other music conservatories I’ve been to.
The greatest thing about going to school in Chicago is... the city. In my opinion, there is more culture here than back at home.
At DePaul, service learning is... being involved in the Community Music Division.
The DePaul University School of Music appealed to me as a student and as a musician because... the faculty, especially Dr. Eteri Andjaparidze. There are many great professors that could teach in other top music schools that choose to teach here. Some professors even play in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. As a student, I feel free to go to other music professors for guidance and for their musical opinions. The school is small enough so that one can receive individual attention from the faculty. Furthermore, there are many performance opportunities that help us grow as professional musicians.
The benefits of attending an urban university when it comes to performance, either on-campus at the Concert Hall or the Merle Reskin Theatre, or off-campus are... Every year, the Amerklavier provides free concerts for the people to enjoy. Because it is located in the city, many people from every background can easily come and experience our concerts.
The best thing about DePaul is... the individualized attention students receive and performance opportunities.
My greatest success as a student here has been... performing in about 10 concerts last year.
After graduation, I plan to... continue my studies at DePaul as a performance certificate student.
The one thing I’d like to say to students considering DePaul is... As a musician, we often focus on attending a “big name music school” to help us out in our careers for the future. For me, it was more important to find the right professor to learn from and to receive the proper level of attention to my studies. In my experience, I have been much happier being in an environment that was encouraging -- and at the same time demanding -- than in a place where everybody just wanted to be famous.
