The Bachelor of Arts degree in Film and Television provides students with a generalist approach to film and television production, using the latest equipment and technology while studying cinema theory, history, and aesthetics. The degree offers a more liberal arts-oriented education, with a broader exposure to all of the areas of film and television production, whereas the BFA in Film and Television offers specialization in one of 11 areas.

DePaul has been named a top film school by The Hollywood Reporter, Backstage, Variety, and MovieMaker for giving students real-world opportunities to work on Chicago’s film and television sets. Film and Television students take classes and work on their projects at DePaul’s nearly 60,000-square-foot professional production facility at Cinespace, next door to the production of high-profile series like Chicago Fire, The Bear, and The Chi. This one-of-a-kind student filmmaking experience allows students to use same facilities and equipment as professional filmmakers.

Degree Requirements

Alexis Auditore (BA '05)

Alexis Auditore who was part of the first graduating School of Cinematic Arts class, is now the director of physical production for Marvel Studios Streaming, for shows like Wanda Vision and Loki. Prior to that, Auditore was the manager of physical production for Marvel Studios for nine years, working on projects like the films, Thor, and Black Panther, and collaborating with various museums and partners around the world to curate Marvel exhibitions featuring costumes, props, and set pieces.

Jose Soto
Jose is an international screenwriter and a producer whose work has been mainly featured in Mexico and Latin America. His latest series is Ay Güey was produced by media giant Televisa.

Brian Zahm
Brian is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited worldwide. At DePaul Brian has focused on building the experimental film program and founding/producing the annual D.E.F. Showcase, an annual collaboration with the DePaul Art Museum.

Shayna Connelly
Shayna is a writer/director/producer whose work explores the concept of hauntings. Her films have screened internationally at festivals and galleries.

James Choi
James’s films have screened widely on the festival circuit. His first feature, Made in China, won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative at SXSW and was distributed by IFC Films. His second feature, Empty Space, was recently released nationally on Xfinity On Demand.

CDM boasts a one-of-a-kind, nearly 60,000-square-foot professional production facility and cinematic learning environment formed in alliance with Cinespace Chicago Film Studios. Students learn filmmaking craft and technique steps away from high-profile network productions filming on the Cinespace lot.

Our annual Premiere Film Festival showcases the best of student work in cinema and animation with awards covering all facets of filmmaking, from screenwriting to post production. Jury members include industry insiders, festival programmers, and filmmakers from around the country.

Project Bluelight

<p class="feature--text">Project Bluelight is a professional, educational, and community outreach program where students receive hands-on experience in motion picture production. The goals of the program are to create high-quality independent films and to provide an intensive, practical, film production experience for DePaul students.</p>
