Excel as a communication professional

Unlike traditional graduate programs in Communication, which typically focus exclusively on either the social science of Human Communication or the cultural dimensions of Mass Communication, DePaul’s Master of Arts in Communication and Media integrates these two areas of study, showing how the fields of human and mass communication inform one another rather than treating them as separate areas of study.  This enables a more holistic, integrated, and interdisciplinary approach to the broader field of communication.  Through such exposure, students develop contextual skills and knowledge that enhance their professional qualifications within academia and beyond.

Students in the program select one of two concentrations while also completing coursework related to the other.  The Applied Communication concentration investigates patterns of interpersonal, relational, and organizational communication across one or more cultures, highlighting the interaction between social communication structures and individual agency.  The Media and Popular Culture concentration explores the history, theories, and methods of analysis used to understand media texts, creators, and industries, focusing on the aesthetic, social, and political dimensions of cinema, television, social media, fandom, games, and popular music.

Courses are offered at both the Lincoln Park and Loop campuses.
