Call for Proposals: Scholarship Learning Community Facilitators

The Office of Research Serviced (ORS) solicits proposals for topics for Scholarship Learning Communities (SLCs) to take place in the 2024-2025 academic year. SLCs are small groups of faculty (max. 10) that meet regularly through the academic year to learn about a chosen topic together. Faculty of any rank are eligible to facilitate SLCs, and facilitators receive an honorarium of $1000. Topics can be anything related to scholarship, innovation, research, or creative activity.

​This year's annual celebration focuses on two of the most important trends facing our society: Innovation and Social Good, while exploring new ideas and approaches to solve existing problems. Both trends are important, but their intersection is likely the most powerful dynamic for change. The intersection of these two trends of innovation and social good is where DePaul can play a transformative role. We are a Vincentian university whose faculty, staff, and students can bring new ideas to the world around us. Innovation Day 2024 will bring the DePaul community together to connect, collaborate, and create innovative strategies addressing important issues centered on poverty, environmental sustainability, and artificial intelligence. The DePaul Pop Culture Conference Announced

May, 2023

The DePaul Pop Culture Conference also celebrates its 10-year anniversary in 2023. Established by Associate Dean Paul Booth in the College of Communication in 2013, the conference is a free, annual academic event that hosts thoughtful discussions with fans, scholars and media makers from around the world to engage in conversation about popular culture and cult media. Each year's event is themed for an important pop culture moment. This year's conference will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Loop, Daley Building, eighth floor, and it will be a "Celebration of Time Travel."  Click here​ for your free registration!​

GWSW 2023 Phase 2 Initiative Launched

Strategies for increasing research capacity are essential for universities given the highly competitive environment for securing grant funding.  At DePaul, one such strategy is the Office of Research Service’s collaboration with Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops (GWSW).   DePaul University’s GWSW Program is a two-phase initiative designed to increase faculty capacity to compete successfully for grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.  The widely acclaimed program combines a lecture format and engagement activities to address comprehensively both practical and conceptual strategies critical to the grant proposal-writing process. Faculty participating in the 2023 Phase 2 GWSW Program, which initiated in February 2023, were nominated by their College and selected by GWSW, for participation based on the merits of their program application. The Phase 2 Program, which employs a write/ review/ comment structure over several months with a GWSW facilitator, culminates with drafting of a complete proposal for submission to a federal agency.  Successful completion of the GWSW Phase 2 Program by select DePaul faculty will increase the cadre of trained investigators essential to building DePaul’s sponsored project infrastructure.

Voting Rights: Bridging Research and Action

October, 2022

Please join us during election week for a keynote and conversation on: Voting Rights: Bridging Research and Action. Keynote speaker Ami Ghandhi, Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, will share her work focused on reducing barriers to voting and improving civic participation, especially in communities of color and low-income communities. Then, DePaul professors, Christina Rivers and Mark Weber will facilitate a reflection and dialogue incorporating their own research and activism related to voting rights – for community member who are formerly or currently incarcerated (Rivers) and those with disabilities (Weber). Sponsored by the Society of Vincent de Paul Professors, the Office of Research Services, and the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center, this 90-minute session will bring together the university community to engage in a scholarly and Vincentian conversation around voting rights and social justice.   Learn More.

New Research Collaborative Between DePaul and RFUMS

July, 2022

A new research & development alliance between DePaul University and Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) is leveraging two fast moving trends nationally and locally - Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Biomedical Discovery & Healthcare. In the Summer of 2022, a new inter-institutional collaborative research grant program was launched. The goals of this joint initiative are to fund inter-institutional collaborative research projects between DePaul and RFUMS investigators that: i) result in high-impact peer reviewed publications; ii) “seed” larger, long-term extramural funding by federal or private granting agencies for new collaborative research between the two institutions, and iii) stimulate technology transfer and commercialization arising from collaborative research.

GWSW Seminar:  Write Winning Grant Proposals: NIH & NSF

April, 2022

This widely acclaimed seminar will focus on proposal writing for two federal agencies (NIH and NSF). GWSW comprehensively addresses both practical and conceptual aspects of writing competitive grant proposals.  Emphasis is given to such concepts such as idea development, understanding the role (and mindset) of your reviewers, and strategies and tips for each major section of a grant proposal.  Participants are taught to write with a linear progression of logic, which leads reviewers through an application. Strategies designed to merit a fundable score are also emphasized. This seminar will  take place on April 29 from 8:30am-4:30 pm

National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity's Faculty Success Program

This workshop will discuss the Faculty Success Program in which participants learn strategies to increase their research productivity. Past participants will share their experiences in the program and provide information on the URC grant program that funds the registration fees. This seminar will take place on April 22 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

From Research to Entrepreneurship: Lean On Us

If you're a faculty member, staff member, graduate student or undergraduate student, there is a bridge between research discoveries and sharing these discoveries and their benefits with others in society. At DePaul, The Coleman Entrepreneurship Center is a resource that you can tap into to get the guidance and support you need to translate your research into products, goods, services or experiences that others value and are willing to pay for. This interactive discussion will consider how to integrate your entrepreneurship with your career and educational plans. 
This seminar will take place on March 18 from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Creating a New Normal in a Covid Society

The Society of Vincent DePaul Professors (SVdPP) and the Office of Research Services present keynote speaker, Dr. Allison Arwady, Commissioner of Chicago Department of Public Health.  Dr. Arwady will discuss the impact of Covid on Chicago and the next steps for our community. Sterling Bay's Prysm Institute and DePaul University Launch Entrepreneurship Initiative

Lunch and Learn Series Creates Collaboration Opportunities

These sessions will enable faculty to network with others across Colleges, share their research, and foster innovative partnerships. The Office of the Provost Launches the Research and Innovation Leadership Fellows Program

The Research & Innovation Leadership Fellows Program offers select faculty members the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of the administration of an academic research enterprise, community partnership, and/or technology commercialization. The goal is to transform research into concrete, impactful discoveries, insights, and innovation. This year, Dr. Marty Martin, Driehaus College of Business, and Dr. Kathryn Ibata-Arens, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, were selected as Fellows. Read more.

Sinai Health System and DePaul University Announce Collaboration on Education, Research, Clinical and Community Programs

Sinai Health System and DePaul join forces to foster more opportunities for the institutions to work together for providing shared education programs for students and researchers, jointly pursuing research and grant opportunities, sharing expertise and data, and promoting sustainable community-academic partnerships aimed at addressing health inequities. The work will bring together expertise from across SUHI researchers and DePaul faculty, and provide opportunities for students to take research and data off the shelf and put it to work in the community. DePaul Creates COVID-19 Research Initiative

June 2020
In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, DePaul called on its scientific community to address challenges in the areas of disease dynamics, health diagnostics, security, preparation for testing and clinical care related to the outbreak. In late spring, 15 proposals were submitted to the university's new "Contributing to the Understanding of COVID-19" initiative. Six projects were approved, and research began this month. Read more.

ORS Initiative Helps Faculty Build Grant Writing Skills

Earlier this month via Zoom, Academic Affairs and the Office of Research Services, in collaboration with the deans' offices of the College of Science and Health and the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media, launched the second phase of its grant proposal writing workshop. Five faculty from College of Science and Health and six faculty from the Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media, are members in the phase two cohort, which runs through September. Read more.

University Announces SUHI-DePaul Research Fellows

April 2020
This month, DePaul announced the first cohort of Sinai Urban Health Institute-DePaul Research Fellows. The program allows faculty to collaborate to understand health disparities and improve health equity in Chicago by translating research into scalable actions. Read more.
