Bruce I. Newman has been at DePaul University since 1987 and is currently professor of marketing as well as the Wicklander Fellow in Business Ethics. In 2005, Professor Newman received the "Spirit of Inquiry" Award, the highest university honor a faculty member at DePaul can receive for excellence in research. As a result of his widely referenced publications, he is heavily cited in Google Scholar with over 20,000 citations.

Since joining DePaul, Newman served as a Visiting Scholar at Meiji University in Tokyo, Japan in 2012; William Evans Visiting Fellow at the University of Otago, New Zealand in 2006; visiting scholar in the Department of Political Science at Stanford University from 2002 to 2003; and as a visiting scholar in the Institute of Government at the University of California-Berkeley from 2001 to 2002.

Newman is also the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Political Marketing (2001), now in its 26th year, published by Taylor & Francis in London. It is the leading academic journal on the topic of Political Marketing. He is considered the leading scholar in the world on the subject of political marketing, who combines an expertise in marketing and politics with his knowledge of consumer psychology and statistical applications. He has published more than 30 books (with some being translated into Chinese, Korean, Italian, Turkish, and Hungarian). His most recent publications include: Understanding the 2022 U.S.: Midterm Congressional Elections (co-editor, 2025); Issues of Political Marketing: East European Perspective (co-editor, 2024); Political Marketing and the Election of 2020 (co-editor, 2023); A Research Agenda for Political Marketing (co-editor, 2022); Political Branding: More than Parties, leaders and Policies (co-editor, 2020).

His single-authored book, The Marketing Revolution in Politics: What Recent U.S. Presidential Elections Can Teach Us About Effective Marketing (2016), highlights the infrastructure changes in the U.S. political system and puts forward the model followed by Donald Trump to win the 2016 presidential election; while his co-authored book (with Todd P. Newman), Brand (2018), puts forward an innovative model that compares and contrasts the branding of commercial and political products and services. In 1994, Newman authored The Marketing of the President, which served as the pivotal intellectual publication that documented the increasingly important role of marketing in politics around the world. Along with his contribution to the field of Political Marketing with books, he has also published over 50 academic articles and chapters.

Newman is a frequent contributor to news outlets, with opinion pieces appearing in The Christian Science Monitor, The Sunday Telegraph, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes, and cnn.com among others. He has appeared on nationally syndicated talk shows in the U.S. and Britain on several occasions, including NPR and BBC, as well as other media outlets in Europe and Asia.

Newman has lectured to numerous professional groups around the world on the topic of political and consumer marketing and has given more than 60 keynote lectures in over 30 different countries during the past 35 years. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi (and past president), Beta Gamma Sigma and Sigma Iota Epsilon. Newman is listed in Strathmore's Who's Who, Who's Who in Advertising, Who's Who of Young Professionals and Who's Who in Media and Communications. In 1993, Newman received the Ehrenring (Ring of Honor) from the Austrian Advertising Research Association in Vienna for his research in political marketing and is the first American recipient of the award.

In March 1995, Newman was invited to the White House to advise senior aides to President Clinton on communication strategy. He subsequently met with President Clinton's senior aides on several occasions at the White House, carrying out research studies over a one and one-half year period, and helped to develop the winning campaign strategy in Clinton’s 1996 victory.

In addition to his work with a U.S. president, he has met and worked with presidents and senior staff to presidents in Poland in 1999, when he met with former President Lech Walesa and his top aides in Poland to advise him on his presidential run in 2000; with the Communication Advisor to the President of Columbia in the Presidential Palace in 2017; and with the former Chief-of-Staff to Deng Xiaoping in the Great Hall of the People in the Tibetan Room in Beijing, China to discuss Political Marketing in 2008.
