About
Ian Ding is a versatile performer specializing in contemporary music, experimental music, and orchestral percussion. He is a founding member & former artistic director of New Music Detroit and currently serves on the percussion faculty at DePaul University School of Music in Chicago, IL.
Ian performs regularly with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and has also appeared with the Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Saint Louis Symphony, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Grant Park Music Festival, and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.
He has been a member of the Sun Valley Music Festival percussion section since 2012. Ian’s chamber and new music credits include the Bang on a Can All-Stars, Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble dal Niente, Fulcrum Point New Music Project, Eighth Blackbird, Third Coast Percussion, the Marc Mellits Consort, the Virgil Moorefield Pocket Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s MusicNOW series, the Long Play Festival in Brooklyn, and Steve Reich’s birthday concerts in Los Angeles and London.
Ian served as producer and artistic director of Strange Beautiful Music, New Music Detroit’s annual festival of contemporary and experimental music, from 2007-2019, and was a board member of the American Composers Forum from 2011-2013. Recent projects include new solo & chamber commissions by Kahil El’Zabar, Anjélica Negrón, Lukas Ligeti, Evan Ziporyn, Annie Gosfield, and Marc Mellits; appearances with Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond); and solo recitals at Constellation Chicago, the Detroit
Institute of Arts, and DePaul University School of Music's Faculty Artist Series.
Ian served as Assistant Principal Percussionist of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra from 2003-2011 and Lecturer of Percussion at the University of Michigan School of Music from 2005-2017. Prior to that he was a member of New World Symphony in Miami and the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland.
He is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the Juilliard School, where his teachers included Tom Stubbs, Thomas Siwe, Jim Ross, William Moersch, and Gregory Zuber. He currently lives in Chicago with his wife, Gina, and daughter, Gemma.
