Makoto Nakayama
BIO
Makoto Nakayama is a professor in the School of Computing at DePaul University’s Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media. His research examines how people and organizations use digital technologies to make decisions, with interests in online consumer behavior, cross-cultural differences in online reviews, enterprise systems, and generative AI adoption and governance.
His recent work explores how organizations apply generative AI in pharmaceuticals and other highly regulated industries, how digital platforms shape consumers’ dining decisions, and how enterprise systems documentation supports organizational knowledge. His research has appeared in journals including Information & Management, International Journal of Information Management, Tourism Management, and Information Processing & Management. His current research on generative AI and AI governance is supported by DePaul’s University Research Council.
At DePaul, Nakayama has taught systems analysis and design, enterprise systems, e-commerce, and information systems strategy. He has also developed and redesigned courses in business intelligence, emerging databases, and digital transformation, and serves as chair of the Information Systems Program Committee.
Before joining academia, Nakayama worked in operating systems software engineering, technology-focused corporate planning, and technology product marketing. He holds a Ph.D. in Management from the University of California, Los Angeles, an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, and a bachelor’s degree in Physics from Tokyo University of Science.
