Dallas Mavericks Retire Mark Aguirre's Jersey

The Dallas Mavericks retired DePaul alum Mark Aguirre’s jersey on Thursday January 29th, 2026, in a ceremony held during the team’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. Mark Aguirre’s jersey (#24) is only the fifth jersey to be retired in Dallas Mavericks history.

Aguirre played with DePaul for only three years, and was drafted to the Dallas Mavericks as their first ever #1 overall draft pick after his junior season. In his first season as a freshman in 1979, he led DePaul to the Final Four with a 26-6 record. This trend continued in Aguirre’s sophomore and junior seasons, and by the time he was drafted to the Mavericks in 1981, the Blue Demons basketball team had earned a 79-10 (.888) record. Aguirre remains the school’s all-time leading scorer. He was inducted into the DePaul Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996, and the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, Class of 2016.

Though he left DePaul after only three years, Aguirre later came back to finish his degree at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies
