Suzanne Hammer (BA ’04, MA ’12), an SCPS graduate, was named one of this year’s American Red Cross Blood Services Heroes.
After returning to DePaul in her 50s, Suzanne earned her degrees while working over 60 hour weeks. Her career path spans banking and the nonprofit sector, and with decades of experience hosting blood drives, she built a career in blood banking at the intersection of the corporate, educational, and nonprofit communities.
While she was a student at SCPS, she was guided by her passion for helping others and worked with a professor to align her studies and graduated from the MAAPS degree program with a concentration in nonprofit management. Suzanne made the decision to return to DePaul to complete her education while in her mid 50s, and her journey shows how DePaul SCPS supports adult learners at every stage of life.
Even in retirement, Suzanne continues to give back. She volunteers at Advocate Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, organizing drives and creating a welcoming experience for donors (often with homemade cookies!).
Suzanne was honored for a lifetime of service during the 24th Annual Heroes Breakfast on May 6th, at an event hosted by the American Red Cross. Her story and dedication remind us that every blood donor is a hero.
