The DePaul University School of Music mourns the passing of distinguished alumnus Walter Parazaider (BM Performance '69), founding member of the legendary rock band Chicago. Over a career spanning more than five decades, his artistry reached audiences around the world, while his enduring connection to DePaul reflected his appreciation for the University where an important chapter of his musical journey began.

Parazaider earned his Bachelor of Music in Performance (clarinet) from the DePaul University School of Music in 1969. While a student, he and fellow classmates Lee Loughnane and James Pankow laid the foundation for what would become the band, Chicago. With its innovative blend of rock, jazz, and horn-driven arrangements, the band has earned its place as one of the longest-running and best-selling groups in music history and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016.

Although his career took him far beyond DePaul's Lincoln Park campus, Parazaider remained connected to his alma mater throughout the years. In 2008, DePaul University conferred upon him an honorary degree in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to music and the arts. The School of Music also honored him with its Distinguished Alumni Award in recognition of his artistic achievements and lasting contributions to the musical profession.

In 2017, Parazaider and his fellow members of Chicago returned to perform a benefit concert at Wintrust Arena, celebrating the opening of the venue while helping raise support for DePaul's School of Music and Athletics Department. The event reflected his generosity and his willingness to give back to the University that played an important role in his life and career.

Following the passing of fellow founding member Terry Kath, Parazaider and his bandmates established the Terry Kath Scholarship Fund at DePaul in his memory. Created to support young musicians at the School of Music, where Parazaider, James Pankow, and Lee Loughnane studied, the fund continues to provide scholarships to four students each year.

We extend our sincere condolences to Walter's family, friends, bandmates, fellow alumni, and the many fans whose lives were enriched by his music. His contributions to music and his connection to DePaul will be remembered with gratitude by the School of Music community. We are proud to count him among our distinguished alumni.
