Admission decisions at DePaul are based on a strong academic record, as well as personal and occupational achievements, ambition, energy, resourcefulness and leadership. We recognize that each individual brings unique abilities to the DePaul community, so we perform a holistic review of a student’s application.

We require the following:

Common Application

Transcript (and English translation, if applicable)

Counselor Recommendation

Personal Essay (recommended)

Audition/interview (for School of Music and The Theatre School)

Creative Portfolio and Statement (for Animation majors)

Admitted Freshman Profile:

Here is a summary of the high school records of the last four admitted and enrolling freshman classes:

One quarter of students were above 3.68 GPA

The middle half of students fell between 3.1 - 3.67 GPA

One quarter of the students were below 3.1 GPA

* The average GPA for admitted and enrolling test-optional applicants was 3.7

Testing Policy

For international students in F1 status educated outside the United States, SAT/ACT are not required for either admission or scholarship consideration.

US citizens and permanents residents may have to submit an SAT or ACT test score for scholarship consideration if:

They are studying in an institution outside the US

Their high school is NOT US accredited or IB accredited or they have not completed all four years of high school at a US accredited or IB accredited institution

*** If the above two criteria do not apply, then they may be considered for admission/scholarships as a test-optional applicant.***

English Language Proficiency

Students educated outside the U.S. for secondary school (high school) are required to submit an exam score that meets our English proficiency requirement.

If a student's English proficiency scores are below the minimum requirement, they might be considered for Conditional Admission.  

Students can demonstrate proof of English proficiency by one of the following:

TOEFL, IELTS Academic and PTE Academic exam scores are valid for two years.  SAT and ACT exam scores are valid for five years.  Scores that are older will not be accepted.

Exception: Students whose secondary education (for all years of secondary/high school) took place in one of the countries below are exempt from the English proficiency requirement.  Students born in one of these countries, yet educated elsewhere for secondary education, are required to satisfy the English proficiency requirement.

Antigua & Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada (English speaking provinces), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Fiji, Ghana, Grenada, Guam, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kenya, Leeward Islands, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Solomon Islands, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, Turks & Caicos, United Kingdom (including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), Vanuatu, and Windward Islands.

If a student applies Early Action to DePaul, he/she will:

Receive an admission decision that is non-binding

Be notified of an admission decision by January 15

Get the strongest consideration for academic scholarships

Be able to apply early for on-campus housing

Receive infromation about orientation, advising and registration before Regular Decision applicants

Chicagoland Counselor Fly-In Tour

Each year, a group of top Chicagoland universities organizes a fly-in tour for high school counselors and EducationUSA advisors following the International ACAC summer conference. The event is organized by Columbia College Chicago, DePaul University, IIT, Loyola University, Northwestern University, School of the Art Institute, University of Chicago, and University of Illinois at Chicago. The fly-in is a great opportunity to familiarize yourselves with the city of Chicago and its many institutions and attractions. This year, the tour is going remote!
