Financial Hold and Past Due Balance Policy

Tuition Due Dates and Financial Holds
Tuition and fees are due in full by the published tuition due date each quarter. If you can't pay your balance in full, please contact a Student Accounts Counselor to talk through your payment options. Our team is here to help you stay on track toward your educational goals.
When a Financial Hold Is Placed
If your balance isn't paid, a financial hold may be placed on your account as follows:

  1. After the last day to add classes (about two weeks after the tuition due date): a hold is placed on accounts with an unpaid balance of more than $800.00.
  2. 31 days after the tuition due date: a hold is placed on accounts with an unpaid balance of $200.00 or more.

Balances under $200.00 do not receive a financial hold.
Why the $800.00 threshold? The Student Health Insurance fee is $800.00. This threshold gives students who plan to waive that coverage time to finish the waiver before a hold is placed.
What a Financial Hold Means
While you have a financial hold, you cannot:

  • Register for future courses
  • Receive your diploma
  • Use alumni benefits

Removing a Financial Hold
To remove a financial hold, you must pay the past-due balance. To review your account, make a payment, or get access to registration, your diploma, or other University services, visit my.depaul.edu.
Referral to a Collection Agency
If your past-due balance is $200.00 or more, stays unpaid for one quarter or longer, and you don't have an internal payment plan, it may be sent to an outside collection agency.
Once your balance is with a collection agency:

  • You must make all payments and payment plan arrangements directly with the agency. DePaul can no longer take them.
  • The financial hold stays on your account until you pay the full balance to the collection agency.

Complaints
You may file a complaint with the Student Financial Accounts Office at studentaccounts@depaul.edu or with the Illinois Attorney General's Student Loan Ombudsperson at illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/File-A-Complaint.
